Volleyball Wins Back-to-Back Matches at Quaker Classic

RICHMOND, Ind. -- The University of Pikeville volleyball team won back-to-back matches for the second time this season, topping Wilmington (Ohio) 3-0 and Berea (Ky.) 3-1 on Saturday during the first day of the Quaker Classic hosted by Earlham.

Wilmington put up a fight in the first set before falling 25-21, then UPIKE went on to close things out with 25-16 and 25-14 wins in the second and third frames. The Bears (5-8) hit their second highest hitting percentage of the season at .410.

Sydney Hall led the way with 11 kills at a .500 clip, while Kaitlyn Welsh chipped in with eight and Cassidy Tackett controlled the net for seven blocks.

Against Berea, the Bears won by set scores of 15-25, 25-20, 25-21 and 25-19. The hitting percentages were much lower with UPIKE faring better at .237 to .155. Rachel Murphy had a career night though, tallying 16 kills at a .261 clip all while adding 16 digs.

Hall reached double figures in kills as well with 11 (.444) and Savanna Zakman led the defense with 24 digs. Zakman had a big day setting as well with 28 assists in the opener and 35 against Berea. She also tallied a team-high three service aces against the Mountaineers.

UPIKE wraps up play at the Quaker Classic on Sunday with a 10 a.m., match against Earlham, followed by a noon start against Concordia-Chicago.
