BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Second-seeded Georgetown was tested by No. 7-seed University of Pikeville in all three sets at the Mid-South Conference Volleyball Championship, but was able to come out on top 3-0 on Thursday night.
The Bears held Georgetown to just a .153 hitting percentage, but couldn't take advantage, hitting just .053 themselves. Blocks made a big difference as the Tigers posted an 18-9 advantage.
Connor Cook and Sydney Hall paced the Bears with eight kills each, Savanna Zakman dished out 23 assists and Rachel Murphy found 12 digs. Amari Eadie and Cassidy Tackett led UPIKE with three blocks each. Georgetown's Jenny Howell led all players with 11 kills and Sarah Bell handed out 32 assists.
UPIKE put together three straight points to take a 12-11 lead in the first set, but turned right around to give up three straight to the Tigers and never led again. Still Georgetown was up by just two at 21-19 before scoring four of the next six points to end the frame.
The Bears posted their largest lead of the match in the second set when they went up 9-6 on a Georgetown error. But a 5-0 Tiger run made it 13-10 in their advantage before the Bears knotted the score at 13-13 on a kill by Hall. Neither team led by more than three points until Georgetown finally got some space at 21-17.
UPIKE, however, was not interested in going away quite yet with a 3-0 run to get within one at 21-20. The spurt seemed to get the Tigers attention though as they closed the set on a 5-0 run to win 25-20.
Things went a little smoother for Georgetown in the final set as it shot out to a 19-12 lead. But before the Tigers could grab an easy win, UPIKE went on a 5-0 run to get within two at 19-17. The two-point deficit was as little as it got though as the Tigers scored six of the last nine points to advance to the semifinals.
With the loss, UPIKE ends the 2016 season with a 17-17 record, marking the first time since 2007 that it posted a .500 record. Georgetown moves to 18-6 with the win and will play the winner of No. 3 Campbellsville and No. 6 Cumberland (Tenn.) on Friday.
