PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Second-ranked Georgetown limited the 19th-ranked University of Pikeville men's basketball team to its lowest scoring output since 2012 in a 69-59 win on Monday night at the East Ky. Expo Center.
Neither team shot well from the field, with the Tigers at 43.8 percent and Bears at 41.5, but Georgetown made 10 3-pointers as UPIKE went just 2-for-8 from behind the arc.
Trent Gilbert hit the bulk of them for the Tigers, going 6-for-11, to score a game-high 18 points. Troy Steward added 15 points off the bench.
UPIKE was led by Darrion Leslie with 17 points, while Trey Rakes and Michael Lewis chipped in with 10 points each. Lewis also led the Bears with eight rebounds and blocked five shots.
HOW IT WENT DOWN
The lead changed hands just once in the entire game after UPIKE (11-2, 1-1 MSC) jumped out to a 14-6 lead in the first 10 minutes and Georgetown (10-1, 1-1 MSC) answered with a 10-0 run to go up by two on a pair of Quan Poindexter free throws. The Bears briefly tied the score at 16 all, but ended up being outscored 17-4 the rest of the half to trail by 13 at the break.
The Tiger lead ballooned to 17 points six minutes into the second half on a Gilbert three and stayed in double digits until Rakes' three free throws after being fouled beyond the arc made it an eight-point game with five minutes to play.
The 10-3 run didn't help UPIKE for long though as Georgetown went back ahead by as many as 15 points in the final three minutes as the teams traded free throws for much of the final stages of the game.
