CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -- Kali Koenig hit a deep 3-pointer at the buzzer to send Mobile (Ala.) past the 24th-ranked University of Pikeville women's basketball team 73-72 on Sunday in the MSC/SSAC Challenge.
The Bears (10-4) led by as many as nine points and were still up by seven with two minutes to play, but the shots stopped falling and the Rams (5-3) took advantage to steal the win. The lead only changed hands four times with UPIKE in front for the majority, but Starla Daggan and Koenig were too good late.
Devin Conley led the Bears in scoring for a third straight game with 21 points, including four threes, while Kelah Eldridge finished with 18 on five 3-pointers. Elisabeth Latham was just shy of a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds.
Daggan tallied a game-high 29 points and Koenig - who now was three buzzer beaters this season - finished with 17.
The Bears struggled from the field at 37.5 percent, compared to a 47.5 percent mark by the Rams. Outshooting Mobile 11-4 from long range kept the Bears in front for most of the game, as did connecting on eight more free throws.
HOW IT WENT DOWN
UPIKE didn't have a quick start like its game on Saturday, but after falling behind 9-7, it went on a 4-0 run on the way to leading by as many as eight points in the opening quarter after a Conley three. Mobile didn't allow things to get out of hand though, going on a 6-2 spurt to end the first quarter down just two at 25-23.
A little over three minutes into the second quarter, Sydney Westry tied things up for the first time since it was 7-7 with two free throws for the Rams. The tie was short though as Eldridge ripped a three on the next trip as the Bears clawed back up by as many as seven points late in the frame on another Eldridge three.
Taylor McGlade opened the second half with a long jumper, but after that it was all Mobile for a stretch. A 9-0 Ram run tied the score for just the third time at 40-40, then three minutes later Mobile grabbed its first lead since it was 9-7 at 48-47 with 4:01 left in the third quarter.
UPIKE outscored Mobile 13-6 over the next six minutes to go back up by eight, then the Rams cut it back down to two before the Bears made one last push to put the game away when a Conley three made it 71-64 with two minutes to play.
But the Bears would score just one more point the rest of the way - a Latham free throw with nine seconds left - as Mobile got a layup from Daggan, two free throws from Koenig and a steal and layup from Sydney Westry to get within one with 48 seconds on the clock.
After a late turnover, Mobile was forced to foul Latham with nine seconds on the clock, she hit the second to go up by two, but Koenig was there with the heroics on a long three as time expired.
