PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Kayla Day's senior day was a good one, finishing with five points, eight assists and two rebounds to help 19th-ranked University of Pikeville to an 83-50 win over visiting St. Catharine on Saturday in the East Ky. Expo Center.
Devin Conley led all scorers with 21 points, making four 3-pointers, and Kelah Eldridge, Aundrea Matchen and Kandice Porter all chipped in with 12 points each. Emily Baker led UPIKE on the glass with seven rebounds off the bench.
The Bears will have one more home game, a non-conference matchup with Bluefield State (W. Va.) on Feb. 29 at UPIKE Gym, but this was the last chance for Day to drop dimes on the Expo Center floor.
Day seemed to dish out the assist on every UPIKE basket during the first half, helping the Bears out to a 12-point lead in the first quarter. UPIKE went up by as many as 24 in the second when Day connected on two free throws near the end of the half.
It was a 22-point game at halftime and it only got worse for St. Catharine from there as Conley opened the second half with a three to make it 47-22. The first 30-point lead came at the 3:26 mark of the third quarter on a layup from Rachel Lee.
UPIKE's largest advantage of the game came in the final minute as Dinyell Calvert scooped up a loose ball for two, giving the Bears a 35-point advantage.
The Bears outshot the Patriots from the field 48.4 to 33.9 percent and hit 10 more free throws (15-5). The backboards were also controlled by UPIKE 46-33, and 22 St. Catharine turnovers turned into 25 points for the Bears.
