Quill, Softball Split at Bryan on Friday

DAYTON, Tenn. -- The University of Pikeville softball team snapped Bryan's give game winning streak after earning a split on the road Friday, losing 9-1 in the opener before winning 3-1 in game two. The Bears move to 3-1 on the season, while the Lions, who are receiving votes in the NAIA top 25, are now 5-3.

Game One

UPIKE's Courtney Morgan went 1-2, slamming a home run in the fifth inning, but it wasn't enough to rally the Bears' bats past Bryan as they lost 9-1 in five innings in the opener.

Sarah Hundley got the win for the Lions after allowing one run in a complete five innings. She struck out five, walked none and surrendered just two hits for the game.

Bryan's Mariam Wood, Lacye Walker, Becca Zimmerman and Katelyn Bowen combined for eight hits and eight RBIs.

Lindsay Floyd took the loss in the circle for UPIKE, dropping to 1-1 on the season. Floyd allowed nine runs on 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings without any strikeouts or walks.

Bryan took command of the game in the first inning with four runs on a pair of doubles, along with a two-run homer from the catcher Zimmerman.

Game Two

Bryan found itself in an early hole this time around as UPIKE was up by three runs in the fourth inning. The Lions never dug out, instead losing for the first time in five games, 3-1.

Bryan attempted to rally back with a single run in the fourth but wasn't able to extend the threat.

UPIKE's Jillian Bohnert had a perfect outing at the plate, going 3-3 with a double in the fourth inning and single in the second and sixth to score a pair of runs.

Pitcher Alexandra Quill had a few tough situations for the Bears, but fought out of them with style. She pitched all seven frames, allowing just one earned run on eight hits with two strikeouts.

Leslie Nunnelly started another potential rally in the seventh inning with a one-out double before moving to third on a single from Wood. But with runners of the corners and two outs, Quill got Kim Borowski to ground out to short and end the game.

UPIKE took the lead in the second when Quill supplied her own support with a two-run home run. Mackenzie Summers added an RBI single in the fourth which was enough to hold off the Lions for the win.

The fourth inning saw Bryan score its lone run as Borowski led off with a single, stole second, then hustled home on a wild pitch after moving to third on a groundout.
