Moore Deals Shawnee State Past Baseball 4-0

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- Four hits was all the University of Pikeville baseball team could muster against Shawnee State ace Derek Moore as it lost 4-0 on Friday in the first of a three-game series on the road this weekend.

Moore, who improves to 5-1 on the season, struck out seven batters and didn't issue a walk in his nine-inning shutout performance. UPIKE's Dalton Dahley (3-4) had a shutout going for five innings before finally being tagged for a run in the sixth to end his day.

The rest of the scoring came in the eighth inning as Bear reliever Bruce Bell ran into trouble in 2/3 of an inning, allowing three runs on three hits. The first run came home on a walk, followed by another on a wild pitch.

UPIKE could never string together more than one hit in an inning, even with Dahley doing his best to give his team a chance. The four hits were spread out over four different batters and all were single-base knocks.

Shawnee State's Mike Watson had the hot bat, finishing 3 for 3 with the games only double, but it was Mitchell Lendenski that manufactures the go-ahead run after singling in the sixth, then stealing second and third base. From there he was able to hustle home on a wild pitch, which ended up being enough for the win.
