PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- For the first time in two seasons, the University of Pikeville softball team has won four straight Mid-South Conference games after sweeping a doubleheader against Shawnee State (Ohio) on Wednesday, 9-8 and 7-0, at Paul Butcher Field.
The Bears are now tied for fourth in the MSC standings with an 11-16 overall record and 5-7 mark in league play, while Shawnee State drops to 9-17 overall and 2-8 in MSC play.
UPIKE outhit SSU 19-12 on the day, including a home run from Breana Pineda and single that turned into an inside-the-park home run for Mackenzie Summers after the ball was bobbled in centerfield.
Alexandra Quill also had a strong showing in the circle in the nightcap, allowing just two hits in a seven-inning shutout performance with one strikeout.

UPIKE 9, Shawnee State 8
UPIKE and Shawnee State changed leads three times in the opener, but in the end, Pikeville was able to claim a 9-8 win despite giving up four runs in the final inning.
The lead was in UPIKE's hands for good in the fourth inning after a three-run double by Jillian Bonhert turned a 4-3 deficit into a 7-4 lead by the end of the frame.
SSU tried to rally back in the seventh, scoring three runs on two doubles and another on a passed ball.
Bonhert racked up her three RBIs on three hits to lead Pikeville at the plate, while Lindsay Floyd got the win after allowing seven runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts in seven innings. Floyd didn't give up any walks.
UPIKE had an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from Quill and Jordan Gentry driving in a pair of runs with a deep single.

UPIKE 7, Shawnee State 0
A four-run explosion in the sixth inning turned a modest 3-0 lead into a 7-0 rout in game two against Shawnee State.
Summers collected four RBIs on three hits, including a single in the second, fourth and sixth innings. It was the last one that did the damage, getting under the glove of the centerfielder, allowing Summers and three teammates to all make it home.
Quill kept SSU off the scoreboard for all seven innings, allowing just two hits.
McKenzie Whitaker took the loss after allowing seven runs on 10 hits in six innings with two walks and just one strikeout.
Pineda provided what would be good enough for the winning run with a one-out solo blast in the second inning. Summers added an RBI single later in the inning as she finished 3 for 3 at the dish.
