Haen Helps Baseball to a Sunday Split with IU-Pennsylvania

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Pikeville baseball team used extra innings to secure a split with Indiana-Pennsylvania on Sunday at Johnnie LeMaster Field. With a clutch bases-loaded hit from Travis Haen in the bottom of the 10, the Bears won 6-5 before losing 2-0 in the night cap.

Haen brought the heroics as well as an overall strong effort at the plate, collecting three hits, two walks, a double and a stolen base. Centerfielder Josh Bailey was good as well, plating a pair of runs on a single in the win, followed by two singles and two stolen bases in the loss.

It was a busy first inning in the opener as Rick Jones drove in a run for IUP (6-6), followed by UPIKE taking a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning on RBI hits from Anthony Roberts and Jacob DiThomas.

Neither team scored over the next three innings until the Crimson Hawks scored three runs on one hit and an error in the fifth. Trailing 4-3 in the eighth inning, UPIKE (10-5) went to the bullpen for Aaron Hedgecock.

The reliever was efficient, allowing just one run and one hit over three innings of work as he hung in for the late-inning win. Down by two runs in the bottom of the ninth, the Bears tied things up for Hedgecock with Bailey's bases-loaded single to left field.

IUP's Michael Klangensmith had walked the first two batters, then reliever Dillon Swanger hit a batter to load things up for Bailey.

After committing an error to start the 10th inning, the UPIKE defense came alive with a put out on a sacrifice bunt, a runner tagged out trying to extend on a fielder's choice and second baseman Erik Manning securing a pop out.

A two-out walk drawn by right fielder Scottie Whitaker in the bottom of the 10 loaded the bases, allowing Haen to drive home the winning run with shallow fly ball that fell in right field.

Game two wasn't as friendly to UPIKE at the plate as it was outhit 8-5 by the Crimson Hawks and failed to score a run in nine innings of action. The Bears instead left 10 runners on base despite connecting on a pair of doubles from Haen and first baseman Jay Vincent.

Bryce Carden was good in eight innings, scattering seven hits for just two runs with seven strikeouts, but the run support never came. Jeff Allen picked up the win, allowing just three hits with three strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.

In what would be enough for the game-winner, first baseman Anthony Rigous hit a home run to left field in the second inning, followed by Rigous adding an RBI single in the seventh.
