Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Drops Two Non-Conference Games at Union

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- Jillian Bohnert hit a home run in both games, but it wasn't enough to lift the University of Pikeville softball team over a hot-hitting Union team on Monday, losing 10-9 and 8-5.

Game one was the continuation of a suspended game from early March. Monday's action picked up in the third inning with the Bears claiming a 5-0 lead, but the Bulldogs wasted little time mounting a comeback with three runs in the opening frame.

As Union crept within a run at 5-4 in the fifth, UPIKE made one last push to stay in front with two runs, but the Bulldogs scored one run in the bottom of the inning before tallying a game-changing four runs in the sixth. Trailing 9-8, the Bears wouldn't go away as they tied things up one more time at 9-9 in the top of the ninth.

But Union kept up its streak of scoring in every inning since the third with one more in the bottom of the inning with one out for the walk-off win.

In game two the Bulldogs put on a clinic at the plate, outhitting UPIKE 13-4, including a triple, four doubles and a home run. They also stayed busy on the base paths, swiping three bases to keep the Bear defense off balance.

Bohnert was the only Bear with multiple hits, including her second home run, although the Bears got a lot done with a little, getting on base with four walks and three hit batters. Using unorthodox ways to score, it was a tie game at 3-3 through three innings.

Union eventually pulled away though, using a three-run fourth inning and two more scores in the fifth to build an 8-5 lead that it wouldn't relinquish.
