Cumberlands Squashes Baseball’s Lead with Two Big Innings

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- While a share of the Mid-South Conference championship is out of the question, the University of Pikeville baseball team still has work to do to stay in the top half of the league standings after falling 11-3 to Cumberlands on Saturday at Johnnie LeMaster Field.

The top four teams in the MSC standings at the end of the season will host a best-of-three series to open the conference tournament. Right now, UPIKE is among them, but will need one more win to make it a lock.

Luckily, the Bears will get just that chance as they host the Patriots for the final two games of the regular-season starting at Noon ET on Sunday.

Justin Beatty paced UPIKE at the plate on Saturday, going 2 for 4 with a walk, while Josh Bailey picked up a hit and stole a base and Anthony Roberts drove in a pair of runs.

There were a bunch of hits in the game with Cumberlands (32-19, 8-11 MSC) leading the way 14-6, but also quite a few errors, led by UPIKE 4-3.

Bear starter Dalton Dahley took the loss on the mound after allowing six runs on seven hits with four walks and one strikeout in five innings. Noah Gapp earned the win for the Patriots in six innings of work, scattering five hits for two runs with five strikeouts and one free pass.

A bunt single and three walks led to the Patriots taking an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Bears answered back with two runs on a hit and two errors to briefly regain the lead.

Roberts drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly, and then Jared Slone, running for the catcher Beatty, stole second, moved to third on a wild throw from behind the plate and then ultimately scored on another errant throw from centerfield.

But the fourth inning truly made the difference in this one as the Patriots struck for four game-changing runs on four hits and two errors. After tallying three straight base hits, a run scored on a fielder's choice, followed by another scoring on a wild throw in the infield. Later in the inning, Kevin Pantoja tripled and later scored when the batter behind him reached on an error.

Down 5-2, UPIKE (23-20, 10-9 MSC) never got closer than three runs the rest of the way as Cumberlands piled on six more scores, compared to just a single run in the seventh for the Bears.
