Softball Rolls Past Alice Lloyd in Two Run-Rule Games

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- It was a feel-good end to the regular season for the University of Pikeville softball team as it won by run rule in both games of a Tuesday night doubleheader against Alice Lloyd. The Bears took game one 9-1 in five innings before going on to rout the Eagles 15-0 in the nightcap, also in just five frames.

Courtney Morgan paced the UPIKE (22-27) offense, going a combined 2 for 3 with five RBIs, three walks and three runs scored with the help of a double in the opener and grand slam in game two. While she hit the only home run of the night, Breana Pineda drove in four runs as well in game two with the help of a double, triple and a walk to go along with a stolen base and three runs scored.

Lindsay Floyd (10-16) earned the win in the circle in game one after allowing just one unearned run on seven hits with four strikeouts, while Alexandra Quill (12-10) claimed the game two win after scattering three hits for no runs with two strikeouts.

The Bears were rolling along so well in the fifth inning of Quill's start that Pineda was given her first collegiate inning in the circle. The senior looked comfortable, getting Alice Lloyd to hit into three straight groundouts.

Two big innings in each game hurt the Eagles (0-27).

In game one it was a seven inning second, as the Bears strung together the runs on eight hits, including a two-RBI double from Jordan Gentry and a two-RBI single by Cassandra Javier. By the end of the inning UPIKE had an early 8-0 lead. The Eagles answered with a run in the third, but Javier helped put the game away with a run-scoring double in the fourth to make it 9-1.

Game two fell apart for the Eagles in the third inning when just a 1-0 deficit turned into a 15-0 rout as UPIKE brought 20 batters to the plate. Most of the damage wasn't done by hits, instead the Alice Lloyd pitching staff handed out six walks and hit two batters to help the Bears' offense along.

While the free passes were bad enough, an inside-the-park home run on an error by Gentry and a grand slam from Morgan in the frame didn't help the Eagles' cause either.

With the regular season now behind them, the fourth-seeded Bears will now focus on the Mid-South Conference Tournament where they are scheduled to face No. 5-seed St. Catharine in the first round at Noon ET on Friday. The double-elimination tournament runs through Sunday at Michael O. Buchanon Park in Bowling Green, Ky.
