PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- No. 6-seed St. Catharine hit solo home runs in the first and third innings to set the tone towards a 4-3 win over the No. 3-seed University of Pikeville in the Mid-South Conference Tournament Opening Round on Thursday at Johnnie LeMaster Field.
Game two of the best-of-three series is scheduled for Noon ET on Friday with an "if-necessary" game to immediately follow.
Hector Quinones gave the Patriots a 1-0 lead with two outs in the first inning on a no doubter over the left-field fence. Two innings later, Carlos Cespedes went the same away on a leadoff blast to make it a two-run game. The lead swelled to three in the next inning on Drew Kissel's RBI single to centerfield.
UPIKE (24-22) finally got involved on offense in the bottom of the fourth when Jacob Dithomas' single down the third-base line hit off the bag, giving pinch runner Jared Slone time to score from second base. The Bears had some good fortune to score again in the fifth as Travis Haen was hit with two outs and advanced to third on a single by Josh Bailey that was mishandled in the outfield, allowing him to hustle on home.
Now just a one-run game, St. Catharine (33-19) saved its win in the eighth inning when its leadoff was hit by a pitch, followed by Alfredo Bohorques bunting for a base hit. A double steal moved the runners to third and second, allowing Quinones to lift a ball to center for a sacrifice fly.
The run ended up being the difference as UPIKE scored again in the ninth on an RBI double ripped to deep left field by Jay Vincent. Bu Vincent, representing the tying run, ended up being stranded as the game ended on back-to-back strikeouts.
UPIKE starter Dalton Dahley took the loss (4-7) after scattering six hits for four runs with five strikeouts and a walk in seven innings. St. Catharine's Daniel Lerma improved to 6-4 with the win after allowing just two unearned runs on seven hits with one strikeout in seven innings as well.
Jake McCoy earned a save after tallying the final three outs, despite allowing a run on two hits before striking out the last two batters.
