Baseball Drops Two at West Virginia Tech 9-6, 2-1

MONTGOMERY, W. Va. -- For the first time since early march the University of Pikeville baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader, losing 9-6 and 2-1 in eight innings at West Virginia Tech on Wednesday.

The Bears were only outhit 19-14 in both games combined, but the Golden Bears made use of back-to-back-to-back home runs in the opener and got a big performance from Tanner Levine in the nightcap to seal the sweep,

Centerfielder Josh Bailey stayed extremely busy despite tallying just one hit, adding an RBI, two runs, a double, walk, stolen base and sacrifice fly in the two games combined. Bailey went 1-3 in game one and gave UPIKE a 1-0 lead in the first inning, rushing home from third on an error.

UPIKE's pitchers struggled in game one as A.J. Carkner and Bruce Bell threw three innings each, allowing nine runs on 11 hits with just one strikeout, registered by Carkner who took the loss.

Tommy McCormick had a strong start in the nightcap, scattering four hits for one run in five innings, but Tech finally got to Logan Sales in extra innings, winning 2-1 on an RBI single by Levine in the eighth.

After Bailey scored in the first inning of game one, Tech answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the frame on an error, groundout and two-run double by Josh Hudson. Pikeville went ahead 6-4 in the fourth inning after a run was walked in and another scored on an error, but Tech sprang back to life with its three straight blasts and never trailed again.

Game two had a lot less offense as UPIKE once again went up 1-0 in the first inning on a single by Justin Beatty, followed by Doug Prather lifting a sacrifice fly into the outfield to tie things up in the second. Five scoreless frames followed in the scheduled seven-inning game before Levine roped an RBI single into center to win it.
