NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- Muskingum's Autumn Devine scored 14 seconds into the action before adding two more goals in the first 17 minutes, which ended up being enough to get past the University of Pikeville women's soccer team 3-1 on Thursday night.
Paulina Ruiz netted a goal in the 84th minute for the Bears (4-2), but the damage had already been done by the Fighting Muskies with Devine's hat trick.
Devine followed up the first-minute strike with a second goal in the 15th minute and a third in the 17th. The first and third goals were assisted by Morgan Price.
Other than the quick start for Muskingum, the game was played fairly evenly with the Fighting Muskies leading in shots 18-16 and the Bears holding an advantage in shots on goal at 11-7. But Muskingum found the back of the net on three of its seven attempts at the net, using accuracy to its advantage,
Lyndsey Jones paced UPIKE with five shots, but keeper Liz Mitchell stopped them all on her way to a game-high seven saves. Bryanna Schroers collected four saves for the Bears before handing the game over to Moreka Buchanan for the final 9:38.
UPIKE can't say it lost because of not having chances as it led the game in corner kicks 6-3, as well as the four more shots on goal, but credit Mitchell for keeping them silent. Heather Maxwell played the final 18:30 in goal for the Fighting Muskies, giving up the shutout in the 84th minute to Ruiz who tucked the ball in the net from the sideline off a free kick.
