GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- At halftime Georgetown led the University of Pikeville women's soccer team just 1-0, but a steady scoring attack made the difference in the final 45 minutes as the Tigers came away with a 5-1 win in the Mid-South Conference opener for both teams.
Georgetown, which is receiving votes in the NAIA Top-25 Poll, improves to 4-2-1 overall with the win, while the Bears drop to 4-3.
The Tigers dominated possession from start to finish, allowing the Bears to take just one shot while firing off 33 of their own. While UPIKE's one shot ended up being a goal by Macarena Acuna in the 79th minute, the damage had already been done.
Georgetown scored first in the second minute on a goal by Bethany Massey that was assisted by Skye Zimmer, then credit the Bears for holding the score at 1-0 for the rest of the half. Chelsie Randolph secured 12 saves for the Bears while playing the first 72 minutes and change in goal.
But eventually the barrage of Georgetown shots took their toll on UPIKE as 20 of its attempts were put on goal. The Tigers scored again in the 46th minute as Zimmer got into the act, followed by goals in the 62nd, 72nd and 87th minutes.
Zimmer led Georgetown with two goals, while Massey finished the game with a goal and an assist.
