No. 22 Women’s Basketball Cruises Past Warren Wilson 101-51

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- With the help of a 17-0 run to start the game, the 22nd-ranked University of Pikeville women's basketball team cruised past visiting Warren Wilson (N.C.) 101-51 on Wednesday in a non-conference matchup at the East Ky. Expo Center.

The Bears (14-6) got 14 points each from Brianna Burbridge, Rachel Lee and Mia Greatrex, while Burbridge and Kandice Porter each pulled down 10 rebounds.

Warren Wilson (7-11) had its three-game winning streak snapped despite a game-high 19 points from Danasia Dumas.

UPIKE controlled the glass 56-31 and outshot the Owls from the field 52.1 to 29 percent. UPIKE also hit 20 of 23 free throws, compared to a 5-8 showing by Warren Wilson. The Bears bench and size were big strengths as they posted a 59-15 lead in bench scoring and 52-24 edge in the paint.

HOW IT WENT DOWN

UPIKE scored the first 17 points of the game in the first four minutes alone, getting an old-fashioned 3-point play from Adison Corder to end the run. Warren Wilson didn't score until the 5:41 mark of the first quarter on a Jameria Anderson running layup.

The Bears led by as many as 23 points in the opening frame at 27-4, but credit the Owls for not backing down in the second quarter as they were outscored just 21-12. Warren Wilson opened the quarter with a 6-2 run to get within 15, but eventually UPIKE's pressure defense paid off to the tune of a 53-22 lead at halftime.

Even though the Owls fared better in the second quarter, they still shot just 27.3 percent from the field, compared to a gaudy 62.9 mark by UPIKE. Over the last 2:30 of the half, the Bears went on a 9-1 run that included a 5-of-6 showing from the stripe.

UPIKE's offensive pace slowed down in the third quarter as it outscored the Owls just 19-8, but the early damage had already been done as it still was able to extend its lead to as many as 42 points in the frame. The scoring picked up again in the final frame, leading to a three from Corder making it a 54-point lead for the Bears with 2:44 to play.

In the middle of the fourth quarter UPIKE enjoyed a 15-2 run that took it from 82-41 with 6:01 left to 97-43 three minutes later.
