No. 22 Women’s Basketball Earns 73-56 Road Win at Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- For the first time in recorded program history, the 22nd-ranked University of Pikeville women's basketball team has won its first three Mid-South Conference road games after taking down Georgetown 73-56 on Thursday.

The Bears (16-6, 5-3 MSC) got 14 points from Devin Conley and 12 from Kelah Eldridge as they forced the Tigers into a season-high 29 turnovers while committing just 14 of their own. Brianna Burbridge and Aundrea Matchen joined them in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Georgetown (5-16, 1-7 MSC) was led by Shelby Beam with 15 points and Emilie Ziese pitched in with a double-double of 10 points and 14 rebounds. The Tigers controlled the glass 46-29, but turnovers and just 32 percent shooting from the field held them back.

HOW IT WENT DOWN

A three from Kelah Eldridge midway through the first quarter gave the Bears a 5-4 lead, but Georgetown responded with a 9-4 run to take a 13-9 lead at the 3:17 mark. UPIKE got even with a quick 4-0 spurt before Ziese and Conley traded baskets in the last 20 seconds to end the frame tied at 15.

The second quarter was when UPIKE really got things rolling. After both teams shot around 30 percent in the first 10 minutes, the Bears ended the first half outshooting Georgetown 50 to 30 percent. Part of that edge happened when the Bears scored the first eight points of the second quarter, taking a 23-15 lead on a layup by Burbridge.

UPIKE went on to lead by as many as 15 points before halftime at 40-25 on a Conley steal and drive to the cup. Justus Martin ended the first half with a pair of free throws to pull the Tigers within 13.

Georgetown had another push left in it as it opened the third quarter on a 10-2 run to make it a seven-point game with 7:25 on the clock after a 3 by Beam. Luckily for UPIKE Conley was there to end the run and hit a 3 of her own which led to a 10-0 Bear run that made it 55-35 after two Matchen freebies.

The Tigers continued to have success though early in the fourth quarter, outscoring UPIKE 13-8 over the first five minutes to make it a single-digit game at 63-54 with 4:21 to play. The Bears just made big plays down the stretch to keep their lead, including a 3 from Kandice Porter with less than two minutes left that pushed it back to a 10-point game.

That shot ended up being the final dagger for Georgetown as it failed to score again, going 0 for 2 from the field and turning the ball over three times in the final 1:30.
