PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Pikeville women's soccer team netted a season high in goals as it topped visiting Hiwassee 5-0 to register its first win of the season on Monday afternoon at the Bob Amos Complex.
It was senior day for eight of the Bears (1-15-1) and Abby Helwig, a member of that group, scored what would be the game-winning goal in the 14th minute on a shot bent from the far, left side of the penalty box.
Fellow senior Macarena Acuna added a goal in the 36th after a long run down the right side and Sylar Chapman made it 3-0 at halftime after heading in a corner kick by Tori Dillon in the 45th.
Chapman added her second goal in the 67th off a short pass from Dana Turner before Turner ended the scoring herself with a goal off a cross from Dillon in the 72nd minute.
UPIKE controlled the majority of possessions for 90 minutes, resulting in a 22-0 lead in shots, including a 16-0 gap in shots on goal. It's the Bears first shutout win since beating Kentucky Christian 3-0 on Oct. 4 last year.
Ashton Schuyler collected 11 saves for Hiwassee, while UPIKE's Caitlyn Hunt registered the complete-game clean sheet without having to make a save.
Acuna paced UPIKE with eight shots, of which five were on goal. Chapman backed her up with six and Turner added two shots.
