PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- The 14th-ranked University of Pikeville men's basketball team held Ohio State-Mansfield to 24.1 percent shooting on its way to an 88-32 rout of the Mavericks on Friday night in the Appalachian Wireless Classic.
Jordan Perry led the defensive-minded Bears (3-0) with 19 points and Darrion Leslie added 10 points and eight rebounds. Jayvian Delacruz had a balanced night of eight points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals as well on 4-of-5 shooting from the field.
UPIKE shot 50.8 percent overall and made 14 of 17 free throws while outrebounding Mansfield 48-29.
It was a total domination for the Bears, but it still took them a few minutes to get going. Manfield had a 5-4 lead early and it was tied 7-7 at the 13:43 mark of the first half, but then a 29-2 run happened over the next six minutes and the rout was on from there.
The lead reached as high as 37 points in the first half on a fast-break layup by Perry before taking a 51-16 lead into halftime. The deficit crossed 50 points with 3:58 to play on one of Brady Schmidt's two late 3s and hit its largest gap at 88-30 on Evan Runkel's put back with 26 seconds on the clock.
Mansfield (0-1) had assists on just three of its 13 field goals and turned the ball over 26 times, compared to just 12 giveaways by the Bears. UPIKE outscored the Mavericks 39-4 in transition and 38-4 off the bench.
Tyson Beebe paced OSU-M with nine points as he was one of three Mavericks to make a 3.
