PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – It took a while to get going, but a stellar second half helped the University of Pikeville women's basketball team to a 101-70 win over Brewton-Parker (Ga.) in the Shawnee State Classic on Saturday.
It was only a 41-40 lead for the Bears (8-5) at the break, but a 60-30 second half made it a blowout in the end.
Brewton-Parker (2-7) has now dropped five straight despite getting a game-high 31 points from Latoya King who hit seven 3-pointers. She didn't get much help as the Barons shot 39 percent as a team and made just 4 of 14 free throws.
Adison Corder hit five 3s for UPIKE to match a career high with 21 points. Rachel Lee added 19 points and Kayla Mullins poured in 18 off the bench. Hailey Anderson, making her second start, joined them in double figures with 11.
It was a career night for some Bears in other stats as Corder and Lee both dished out a career-high six assists and Emily Baker tallied her best rebounding effort of 14. Baker was all over the court, adding six points, four assists, a block and a steal to her day.
UPIKE wound up shooting 51.6 percent from the field, leading the game on the glass 42-37 and hitting 22 of 25 free throws.
The Barons had led by as many as 10 points near the end of the first quarter, but a 9-0 Bear run to start the second gave it back the lead at 31-30 on a jumper by Baker. Still, it wasn't until the 1:34 mark of the second that UPIKE took the lead for good on a 3 by Corder.
It was still close for the opening three minutes of the second half until Lee decided to put on a show be herself. The senior hit back-to-back triples and broke free for a layup in less than a minute span to get the UPIKE lead to double digits. Later on, a 3 by Mullins at the buzzer made it 69-55 heading into the final quarter.
Brewton-Parker didn't make up any ground in the fourth, instead watching the Bears score the first five points and continue on to leads as high as 33 points on a Taylor Berger free throw in the final seconds.
