Baseball Edged at Point 7-6 on Ninth-Inning Single

EAST POINT, Ga. -- After rallying back to tie the game with two runs in the top of the ninth inning, the University of Pikeville baseball team watched Point respond with a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the frame by Bryce Jay to give the Skyhawks a 7-6 win on Saturday.

The win gives the series to Point (5-5), which won two out of three games over the weekend. UPIKE falls to 3-4 with the loss, playing all seven of the early season games on the road.

Travis Haen, Justin Beatty and Matt Peterson tallied two hits each to lead UPIKE, but Josh Bailey's double was its only extra-base hit of the game. Peterson drove in a pair of runs and three others had one RBI each.

First baseman Christian Cabral paced Point at the plate, collecting three hits and driving in a pair of runs.

Bryce Carden started the game for UPIKE, allowing three runs on five hits with two strikeouts in five innings, but A.J. Carkner took the loss after being on the mound once the game was tied. Carkner gave up just the one run on three hits with one strikeout.

James Brooks pitched the sixth and seventh innings, giving up three runs on four hits with a pair of strikeouts.

The lead switched hands five times during the game, including a frantic last two innings. Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth, the Skyhawks drove in three runs on three hits to take a 6-4 lead. Two of the runs came home on Cabral's single to left field.

But UPIKE wasn't interested in laying down, instead answering with two runs on two hits, including a sacrifice fly by Beatty and single to right by Brandon Sewell to tie the game. The frame started with a new pitcher in Scott Orcutt, but he hit Bailey to lead off the inning.

Bailey moved to third on a single by Haen, then scored on Beatty's lift to the outfield. Once the game was tied, Orcutt was able to sneak in and record the win after the game-ending hit in the bottom of the ninth.

The scoring sequence went single by Gehrig Vargas, Jeffery Ginn being hit by a pitch, then Jay singling to right to bring home pinch runner Dylan Stark.
