Baseball Splits Sunday Doubleheader at WVU Tech

MONTGOMERY, W. Va. -- After coming back for a 6-4 win in the opener, the University of Pikeville baseball team lost a late lead in game two to fall to West Virginia Tech 4-2 during a Sunday afternoon doubleheader.

With the split, the Bears move to 9-5 overall, while the Golden Bears are now 4-8. The opening win gave UPIKE six straight, matching its longest winning streak from last season.

Anthony Roberts stood out at the plate, finishing with a combined two hits, RBI and a walk to lead UPIKE. Justin Beatty joined him as the only Bears to tally multiple hits, but he had one in each game to get there. Beatty was one of UPIKE's just two hits in the game-two loss with Daniel Sterenberg recording the other on an RBI single.

UPIKE was outhit 7-6 in game one, but saw the Golden Bears fall apart on the mount and in the field during a pivotal fifth inning. Tech had taken a 4-1 lead in the third inning on Jacob Reimold's three-run homer, but UPIKE struck back with five runs on three hits and an error in the fifth to win the game.

The frame started with Jay Vincent reaching on an error with one out, then Jorge Perez was hit by a pitch. Travis Haen walked to load the bases and then Alec Barba was hit by a pitch to bring the first run home. After changing pitchers, Tech gave up back-to-back RBI singles to Beatty and Roberts to make it a 4-4 game.

UPIKE grabbed the lead for good when Matt Peterson roped a two-run single past the shortstop to score Beatty and Barba before a strikeout ended the inning.

Aaron Hedgecock kept the Golden Bears quiet over the final two innings to grab the save and preserve a third straight win for Dalton Dahley (3-0) who scattered five hits for four runs with two strikeouts in four innings of work.

Sterenberg hit an RBI single in the second inning and Peterson drove in a run on a groundout in the fourth to give UPIKE a 2-1 lead heading into the fifth inning of game two. But it was in that inning that Tech got it's bats going for three runs on three hits.

It all started with a walk, followed by a single, double and single that all three drove in one run to turn the tide for the Golden Bears. Up 4-2, Jerod Jobst finished up his stellar start without allowing any more runs as he improved to 2-0 on the season after allowing just two hits in a complete seven innings.

One only run was earned against Jobst as he struck out six batters and walked two. Bryce Carden dropped to 1-2 with the loss after allowing four runs on six hits with five strikeouts in five innings.
