Softball Makes Quick Work of Alice Lloyd in 13-0, 14-5 Wins

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Pikeville softball team picked up its first two wins of the season on Monday and it only took 10 total innings to do so in a pair of five-inning win over Alice Lloyd at Paul Butcher Field.

UPIKE (2-4) outhit the Eagles 11-1 in the opener on its way to a 13-0 win before following that up with a 14-5 win in which it won the hit battle 13-5.

Jordan Gentry hit a two-run home run in game one and Logan Cline went 2 for 2 with two-RBIs and a triple. Kylie Barcus added a triple as well in one pinch-hit appearance.

Game two's leaders were Hannah Absher and Lee Griffin roping triples as Absher finished 2 for 2 with four RBIs.

The pitching decisions went to Hannah Thacker (1-0) in game one after allowing the Eagles (0-8) just one hit and striking out two in five innings, followed by Lindsey Floyd (1-1) scattering five hits for five unearned runs with four strikeouts in the nightcap.

It didn't take the Bears long to take control in game one as it hit around the order in the first inning on its way to nine runs on five hits and an error. Lee Griffin led off with a double and was later the first run to score on an RBI single by Kitty Raymond. Many at bats later, Gentry scored the final two runs of the frame with her homer to left field. It was Gentry's second career long ball after also hitting one last season.

With Thacker continuing to quiet Alice Lloyd's bats, UPIKE added three runs in the second and one in the third to bring the game to an early close.

It looked like game two would be a lot of the same when the Bears opened with seven runs on five hits in the first inning, but they had major problems in the field the next inning. Five errors later, they had allowed the Eagles to strike for five runs to cut the deficit to just two.

In the end, UPIKE avoided a total collapse by tallying another seven-run effort in the third inning. It was a hit heavy frame as Lee Griffin tripled to drive in the first run, then Gentry, Cline and Ashley Goines hit three straight RBI singles. The final three runs came home when Absher crushed a triple to deep, right field.

With UPIKE up 14-5, both teams failed to score over the final two frames, bringing a second straight game to a quick end because of the eight-run rule.
