PIKEVILLE, Ky. – A slow start to the day for the University of Pikeville baseball team led to a split with Alice Lloyd during a Wednesday doubleheader at Johnnie LeMaster Field. The Eagles used a 4-0 first-inning lead to hold off the Bears 5-4 in the opener before UPIKE went on to rout them 15-0 in the nightcap.
Up next for UPIKE (17-11) is a doubleheader with Cincinnati Christian at 1 p.m. ET on Tuesday in Pikeville. Alice Lloyd moves to 3-11 on the season with the split.
Alice Lloyd 5, UPIKE 4
Despite falling behind by four runs in the first inning, UPIKE nearly came all the way back before falling 5-4 to Alice Lloyd on Wednesday at Johnnie LeMaster Field.
UPIKE scored four runs in its comeback effort on a home run by Jorge Perez in the second and a single by Travis Haen in the fourth.
In the bottom of the fourth, UPIKE tied things up at 4-4 when Haen drove in one run on a single. Perez's three-run rocket to right field in the second inning made the tying hit possible.
But over the last three frames, the only run scored was on the Eagles' go-ahead fielder's choice hit by Ryne Loggins. Three straight singles had loaded the bases with one out, allowing Austyn Turner to hustle home from third when Loggins' bat hit the ball.
Levi Martin earned the win on the mound after 5 1/3 innings, surrendering four runs and eight hits. Logan Price recorded the last five outs to earn the save. Tommy McCormick was handed the loss after allowing a run on three hits in an inning and a third.
Dalton Dahley started the game for UPIKE and lasted just two innings after giving up four runs on three hits with one stikeour.
UPIKE and Alice Lloyd each had seven hits in the game, including Perez going 2 for 2 with three runs drove in. But the Bears did have four errors and stranded Josh Bailey at third in the first inning when he roped a triple for UPIKE's only extra-base hit aside from Perez's blast.
UPIKE 15, Alice Lloyd 0
Game two couldn't have gone any different for UPIKE as it outhit Alice Lloyd 15-4 en route to a lopsided 15-0 shutout win.
Three pitchers combined to shut down the Eagles, ending with Brandon Sewell striking out Perry Franklin to finish off the win.
Josh Bailey led UPIKE at the plate by driving in four runs. He went 3-for-4 including an RBI single in the second and a home run in the third.
UPIKE took the lead for the first time on Peyton Dove's RBI single in the second and didn't look back from there.
Bruce Bell earned his first win of the season after throwing five innings with just three hits allowed and five strikeouts. Chase McKinney threw one inning and Sewell closed out the seventh.
Broderick Moore took the loss for Alice Lloyd after tossing 1 2/3 innings while surrendering six runs on four hits with one strikeout and walk each.
Bailey, Anthony Roberts, Cody Stinnett, Haen and Dove each tallied multiple hits for the Bears while playing error free in game two.
