PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The University of Pikeville baseball team completed its second four-game sweep of the season after topping St. Francis (Ind.) 3-0 and 8-6 on Sunday afternoon at Johnnie LeMaster Field.
The Bears have now won 10 of their last 11 and stayed perfect at home with a 9-0 record. UPIKE is now 13-5 overall, while St. Francis falls to 3-16-1.
Mid-South Conference play is on deck for UPIKE as it travels to Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Ky., on March 10-11. The opener of the 3-game series is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. ET on Friday with a single, nine-inning game.
Sunday's pitching decision went to Aaron Hedgecock (4-0) in the opener, as he threw a gem, shutting out St. Francis while allowing just five hits and striking out four in a complete seven innings of work. And in game two, Max Hall collected his second win of the season after scattering seven hits for three runs with three strikeouts in five innings.
Hedgecock got a boost from Travis Haen in the opener as he knocked in two runs in the third inning with a single, while Justin Beatty added some insurance in the fifth with a base knock. No one in the game had more than one hit, but UPIKE's Anthony Roberts and St. Francis' Jordan Dickinson both collected doubles.
Game two had a little more pop with St. Francis posting a 12-10 lead in hits despite the loss. SFU's pitcher Noah Friemuth led it at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a double and driving in a pair of runs. However, his pitching didn't hold up as he allowed seven runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 frames.
Behind a pair of two-hit, two-RBI performances from Josh Bailey and Haen, the Bears shot out to an 8-3 lead through five innings. But SFU made things interesting in the seventh with three runs off of reliever Chase McKinney. But he finally slowed down the bats and got a strikeout to preserve the win.
Bailey added a double and stolen base in the game-two win and designated hitter Alec Barba added to the early lead with a sacrifice fly.
