PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- In the final four games of the regular season, the University of Pikeville softball team went on the road to sweep a doubleheader with Asbury on Wednesday before dropping two games to Union at home on Thursday.
The Bears (18-30)Â now look ahead to the postseason where they will open play in the Mid-South Conference Championship on April 28-30 at Michael O. Buchanon Park in Bowling Green.
During UPIKE's 2-2 week, Kitty Raymond led the way with a combined five hits, two doubles and two RBIs, while Lindsay Floyd collected five hits and drove in three runs. Kill Bohnert tallied a pair of doubles during her five hits and Destiny Molden tallied one double.
Kelsey Prater had a solid week at the plate as well with three RBIs on two hits. Prater and her teammates won at Asbury 4-0 in game one and 8-2 in game two before losing 7-0 and 7-6 to Union. The Bears outhit Asbury a combined 29-13, but struggled at the plate on Thursday, being outhit 12-1 by Union in the opener.
The second game against Union was a little more even as the Bulldogs claimed just an 11-8 advantage at the plate in a game that saw UPIKE lose a 5-3 lead in the sixth inning when Union scored four runs on six hits, including a two-run single by Destinee Arnold.
Game one with Union stayed scoreless for the first three innings before the Bulldogs scored three runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and two more unanswered in the sixth.
UPIKE's 4-0 win in game one at Asbury was aided by Alexandra Quill's dominant performance in the circle, scattering six hits in a complete-game shutout with three strikeouts. Hannah Skaggs backed that up with a strong 7-inning showing herself in game two, allowing two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts against just one walk.
Pikeville had a 7-0 lead in the nightcap before the Eagles would score their first runs of the day in the bottom of the fifth inning, but it was too little, too late with Skaggs in control.
