Bailey, Roberts Help Baseball to Sweep of Lindsey Wilson

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- The University of Pikeville baseball team snapped a four-game skid in style, sweeping a Mid-South Conference doubleheader at Lindsey Wilson on Thursday. The Bears exploded for a 14-2 win in game one before holding on for a 5-4 win in the nightcap to win its second MSC series of the season.

UPIKE (22-20, 5-12 MSC) and the Blue Raiders (26-22, 10-7 MSC) will wrap up the series at 1 p.m. ET on Friday at Egnew Park.

Anthony Roberts and Josh Bailey had themselves a day, combining for a whopping five home runs. They each hit two in the lopsided opener and Roberts added a solo shot in game two. Bailey went 6 for 9 at the plate, driving in five runs and scoring five himself with a stolen base as the icing on the cake.

Aaron Hedgecock was dominant on the mound in the first game, scattering five hits for two runs with seven strikeouts against just one walk in seven innings. Hedgecock exited in the seventh with an 11-2 lead as Max Hall finished the game off from the bullpen.

Game two was started by Bruce Bell who lasted 3 1/3 innings before coming out with a 2-1 deficit. By the bottom of the seventh, the Bears were enjoying a 5-2 lead behind reliever Brandon Sewell, but LWC was able to make up two runs with a double by Jayden Jackson.

Up just 5-4 with no outs, UPIKE went to closer A.J. Carkner who didn't allow a hit and struck out one batter to claim his fourth save of the season.

After already scoring three runs on two hits in the first inning of game one, UPIKE got four more in the second on Bailey's home run and a two-run double by Jay Vincent. Up 11-2 in the ninth, the Bears put a punctuation mark on the win with back-to-back home runs by Bailey and Roberts.

Trailing 2-1 in the top of the fifth inning of game two, UPIKE got back on top with a two-run single by Jorge Perez. Roberts' seventh-inning blast came in the second at-bat of the inning, scoring Bailey who had singled to make it 5-2.

After hitting a batter and giving up a walk to start the bottom of the frame, the Bears saw their lead be trimmed to one with Jackson's double. But that would be the last hit of the game as Jackson's pinch runner was stranded on second as Carkner ended the game with a strikeout and two fly outs.
