Baseball Routs Lindsey Wilson 12-1 in MSC Championship Opening Round

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Reigning Mid-South Conference Player of the Week Anthony Roberts and Jorge Perez each drove in three runs to lead the No. 6-seed University of Pikeville baseball team past No. 3-seed Lindsey Wilson 12-1 in the opening round of the MSC Tournament on Friday.

The win for the Bears (25-21) was their fourth against the Blue Raiders this season after sweeping them on their home field last week.

Aaron Hedgecock picked up his sixth win in seven decisions this season, allowing just one run on five hits in over eight innings of work.

Game two of the best-of-3 series is slated for 2 p.m. ET on Saturday with a third "if-necessary" game to follow 45 minutes after the conclusion of game two.

Louis Corral dropped to 3-2 with the loss on the mound for Lindsey Wilson (26-24) after he gave up seven runs on six hits in the first three innings.

The first inning was a rough one for Corral and set the tone for UPIKE's lopsided postseason win. It started with Travis Haen reaching on an error and Justin Beatty hitting to single before they both advanced a base on Josh Bailey's fly out.

Following a strikeout, Jorge Perez hit a two-run single to center, followed by Jay Vincent slipping a run-scoring single to left field to give the Bears an early 3-0 lead that they would never relinquish.

After two scoreless frames, UPIKE added six runs on four hits in the fourth, including a two-run single by Brandon Sewell and two-run double from Bailey.

Up 9-0 in the sixth, Roberts hit his fifth home run at Lindsey Wilson's home field in just under a week to add two runs to the lead. The Blue Raiders eventually got on the board in the seventh with a two-out single by Connor Anderson, but that's all the Bears would allow.

Alec Barba finished off the scoring in the ninth inning by hitting his second home run of the season to get to the final 12-1 margin.
