Skaggs Shines, But Softball Drops 13-Inning Marathon to Campbellsville

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- In the longest game in recorded program history, the fifth-seeded University of Pikeville softball team lost 2-1 to No. 2-seed Campbellsville in 13 innings in an elimination game at the Mid-South Conference Tournament on Saturday.

Hannah Skaggs (6-9) threw 10 innings and allowed just one run on five hits with two strikeouts, but Campbellsville outhit her Bears 7-6 and played error free in the field to outlast UPIKE for the win. Hannah Absher and Logan Cline tallied two hits each and Jill Bohnert drove in the Bears' lone run with a third-inning single.

Rachel Denkins (7-1) pitched the final eight innings to grab the win for Campbellsville, allowing just three hits without surrendering a run while striking out a pair of batters.

Bohnert's RBI single in the third was the first run of the game. Lee Griffin reached on a walk to start the inning and a sacrifice bunt and ground out pushed her to third base with two outs, allowing Bohnert to drive her home. That would be the Bears' only run of the game.

The Tigers got the run back in the fifth inning when Brianna Scott reached base on an error and later scored on Alexis Smith's single.

After seven scoreless innings, Hailey Szpila tripled to lead off the bottom of the 13th. UPIKE intentionally loaded the bases to set up its defense, but Jacqueline Roof singled to right field to bring the game to a close.

UPIKE closes the 2017 season with an 18-32 record, while ninth-ranked Campbellsville improves to 37-12.
