PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- West Virginia Tech overcame three errors to claim a 6-2 win over the University of Pikeville baseball team on Wednesday at Johnnie LeMaster Field.
Kase Mattingly and Matt Peterson tallied two hits each and Justin Beatty drove in a run with a double, but the Golden Bears outhit UPIKE 11-7, including doubles from Sebastian Gomez Herrara and Tanner Levine, to register the win.
It was tied 2-2 after two innings, but the Bears (17-15) failed to score again as West Virginia Tech (18-20) took the lead for good with a Chris Davidson RBI single in the top of the third.
The Golden Bears added to the lead with another run in the sixth before pushing ahead 6-2 with two more in the seventh, including an RBI double by Devine, who would go on to score on a bases-loaded walk.
UPIKE put a runner on third base in the final two frames, but the threat ended on a groundout in the eighth and a double play in the ninth.
Josh Bailey took the loss on the mound after scattering eight hits for four runs with two strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Marcus Rodridguez grabbed the win in relief, allowing just two hits and no runs in four innings, while Dalton Grisell entered in the ninth with runners on first and third to get the save.
