MSC Tournament: Wild One Ends with Baseball Edging Georgetown 13-12

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- The University of Pikeville and Georgetown played a game that won't soon be forgotten in Mid-South Conference Baseball Tournament lore, but before we get to the details, just know the Bears came away with a 13-12 win.

While UPIKE (27-23) will extend its season another day, there is still plenty of work to do in Bowling Green. Let's just hope it can put this wild one behind it.

When the wild times started it was a normal 2-1 lead for Georgetown in the seventh inning with two outs, but then Pikeville went to work. When it was all said and done, the Bears had scored 12 runs on 10 hits while sending 18 batters to the plate to take a 13-2 lead.

Eleven-run leads seem pretty safe, but that's not always the case in postseason collegiate baseball. Including a 3-run home run by Ryan Viramontes late in the rally, the Tigers staged a furious comeback, tallying 10 runs in the ninth to get within a single run.

But with the bases cleared after the blast, reliever Brandon Sewell recorded a strikeout of Diego Perez and the Bears could finally breathe a sigh of relief and start thinking about the journey that lies ahead.

UPIKE will meet the loser between top-seeded Campbellsville and No. 2-seed Cumberlands at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday. With a win in that one, the Bears would be looking at needing to beat the lone undefeated team twice. The first game of that scenario would start at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday with an "if necessary" championship scheduled for 10 a.m., the following day.

Before Sewell could register the save on the mound, he had the tying hit in the seventh when his double brought home Jay Vincent from second to make it 2-2. After Justin Beatty was intentionally walked, Alec Barba stepped to the plate and knocked in the go-ahead run with a single to left.

From there, the inning just continued to go UPIKE's way. There was a 2-run single by Anthony Roberts, RBI double by Jorge Perez and a 2-run triple by Sewell just to name a few of the big moments.

After the scoring frenzy, A.J. Carkner took over on the mound and threw a flawless seventh. Outfielder Matt Peterson came in to pitch in the eighth and didn't allow a hit. But then in the ninth the Tigers got to Peterson, scoring five runs off him before Chase McKinney could take over.

Three straight singles later Georgetown had added three runs off McKinney before he could hand the game over to Sewell. Before he could get the winning strikeout, the 3-run homer happened to make it 13-12, providing some tense feelings during Perez's final at bat of the game.

In the end, UPIKE outhit Georgetown 17-10, but had four errors against just one for the Tigers. Before the game got run happy, Dalton Dahley (6-2) had thrown a strong six-inning start for the Bears, earning the win after scattering four hits for two runs with three strikeouts.

Breion Barron (7-5) started for the Tigers and was stuck with the loss after allowing five runs on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks in 6 2/3 innings.

Beatty, Josh Bailey and Travis Haen all had three hits in the game, while Sewell finished with a team-best three RBIs on two hits, which were a double and triple.

Originally scheduled for Friday before rain got in the way, the tournament got started with UPIKE taking on Campbellsville in a game that the Tigers won 7-2.

Campbellsville took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and later went ahead 6-1 after a 4-run fifth inning. Another Tiger run in the sixth made it 7-1 and that was a big enough gap to hold on for the win as all UPIKE could muster the rest of the way was a single run in the seventh.

Barba was the only Bear with multiple hits as he reached safely on two singles, driving in one run. Beatty drove in the other run on his lone hit. Campbellsville (32-17) outhit the Bears 13-7 overall as none of UPIKE's went for extra bases.

Aaron Hedgecock (6-2) took the loss after allowing six runs on nine hits with two batters struck out in 4 2/3 innings. On the other side, Nick Przybylek pitched a complete game, scattering seven hits for two runs with five strikeouts to improve to 8-3 on the season.
