PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Lindsey Wilson played up to its billing as the third-ranked team in the nation as it topped the University of Pikeville volleyball team 3-0 on Thursday in the Bears' Mid-South Conference opener at UPIKE Gym.
UPIKE (4-9, 0-1 MSC) was strong on serve receive, allowing just four aces, but struggled to find open spots on the attack, resulting in a .000 hitting percentage (22 kills, 22 errors).
Lindsey Wilson (13-0, 3-0 MSC) had little trouble getting kills, as evident by its .506 hitting mark for the match which included a second set when it hit .600 as a team (15-25, 0 errors). Paulina Sobolewska was the lone player in double figures with 12 kills.
Noelani Simpson gave the Bears seven kills at a .095 clip, while Amari Eadie (.133) and Cassidy Tackett (.063) added five kills each. Savanna Zakman had 17 assists, Brittany Reels had nine digs and Brooke Pickler hit UPIKE's lone ace in the third set.
Lindsey Wilson scored the final nine points of the first set to win 25-8, then led by as many as 14 points in the second at 16-2. The Bears and Blue Raiders were even at 14 all in the third set before LWC went on an 11-4 run to end the match.
