RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- A three-match skid was stopped by the University of Pikeville volleyball team on Wednesday as it dominated Rio Grande for three sets on the road.
The 3-0 win was claimed by set scores of 25-19, 25-14 and 25-18 as the Bears controlled the match in hitting percentage .208 to 0.98. Amari Eadie and Katie Slone had a lot to do with that, tallying seven and six kills, respectively, at more than a .300 clip.
Noelani Simpson led UPIKE (5-10) with nine kills, but needed 41 swings to get there, leading to a .122 hitting mark. Savanna Zakman had 26 sets in the short match and Natalia Gascot added 11 digs. The bulk of the blocking went through Eadier, who finished with three.
Rio Grande (3-13) lost its second match of the season to the Bears as seven kills from Patricia Dennis was the most in could muster.
Other standout numbers for UPIKE include Zakman with four aces, Brittany Reels with two aces and six digs and Brooke Pickler stepping up on defense with five digs. Simpson was also important on defense as she found nine digs to go along with her kills.
