PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Overtime looked inevitable with less than six minutes to play in a 1-1 game, then Midway's Kindsay Miller-Riney dribbled past a pair of defenders to sink a goal from the middle of the penalty box and give the Eagles a 2-1 win on Saturday at the Bob Amos Complex.
It was Miller-Riney's second goal of the game as she had netted an equalizer in the 56th minute in nearly the same fashion. That time she only had one defender to beat and the strong, looping shot came from the corner of the box.
The first goal of the game didn't come until the 41st minute when Reagan Bridge followed up a foul call about 30 feet out with a beautiful free kick that curved into the back of the net. Bridge's score put the Bears (0-8) in front for 15 minutes before Miller-Riney went on a mission by herself to bring Midway back.
The clock read 84:18 when Miller-Riney sank the game winner, spoiling a wonderful defensive effort by goalkeeper Caitlyn Hunt who finished with three saves in a full 90 minutes.
Midway (4-0) led the game in shots 10-6, including a narrow 5-4 lead in shots on goal. Corner kicks went UPIKE's way 5-2, as did fouls 11-7. Both keepers finished with three saves as Emily Belt matched Hunt. Bridge paced the Bears with two shots and three different Eagles took two shots as well.
