PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Febraury is here, which means March is just a month away, so things will be getting serious with basketball from here on out. First up in that mission is a trip to Shawnee State in Portsmouth, Ohio for the University of Pikeville basketball teams on Thursday night.
The women kick things off at 6 p.m. ET with the men to follow at 8. Both games can be watched via Shawnee SportsNet.
The Bears of SSU are 12-11 overall and 2-5 in the MSC on the men's side, while the women are ranked second nationally with a 20-3 record and perfect 7-0 mark in league play. UPIKE's men enter at 20-2 overall and 5-2 in the conference and the women are an even 11-11 overall and 3-4 in the MSC.
UPIKE's men lead the all-time series with Shawnee State 21-3, including an 11-2 record on the road. Pikeville has won the last 13 games in the series, last losing in 2011 at home 86-84. In the most recent meeting, UPIKE held off SSU 88-84 on Jan. 6 behind 20 points from Jayvian Delacruz and a career-high 15 rebounds from Darrion Leslie.
The battle of the Bears resumes for the women for the 42nd time as Shawnee State leads the way between the two teams 37-4, with all four of UPIKE's wins coming in the East Ky. Expo Center. The last time Pikeville topped SSU was back in 2011, 70-67. SSU won 83-58 last month behind 25 points from Ashton Lovely.
