Men’s, women’s soccer lose at Georgetown

GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- UPIKE soccer ended a brutal back-to-back road trip on Saturday, losing both ends of a men's/women's doubleheader at Georgetown. The women's team lost 4-0 and the men's team lost 2-0.

Women's

For the second straight day, UPIKE couldn't muster a shot against the opposing defense which smothered the Bears throughout the match.

Meanwhile, the Tigers' offense was firing on all cylinders, launching 33 shots, but only 14 on goal. Georgetown got on the board in the 13th minute on a goal from Lauren Duggins.

GC added another goal in the 26th minute after Bethany Massey converted a penalty kick. Kelsey Castle scored later to give Georgetown a 3-0 halftime lead.

The Bears defense made some strides in the second half, holding the Tigers to just six shots on goal. The lone Tiger goal in the second half was Massey's second of the match, this one in the 54th minute.

Men's

After resting the starters on Friday, the men's team couldn't find enough offense to get past the Tigers.

The two teams were nearly identical in the first half, with UPIKE putting just barely more shots on goal than Georgetown at three to two.

However, things began to unravel for UPIKE once the cards began to come out. There were a total of 16 fouls in the match and the cards accompanied as time went on.

Georgetown received two yellow cards in less than 30 seconds early in the second half, but then UPIKE received two of their own before Georgetown finally got on the board.

Michael Devlin scored in the 76th minute, and Nick Gregory followed another goal three minutes later. From there, the Bears received two more cards, once of which was a red card before the match ended.

UP NEXT

UPIKE ends the regular season on Monday at home against Life as both teams have their senior night. The women's match will begin at 1:00 p.m., while the men's match will begin shortly thereafter.
