Men's basketball dominates OSU-Mansfield to finish Appalachian Wireless Classic

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Pikeville men's basketball had it's most dynamic offensive day in quite a while on Saturday as the Bears overpowered OSU-Mansfield by the score of 134-59.

The 134 points is the most by a Bears squad since the 2010-11 national champion team when it also defeated OSU-Mansfield 145-52.

Overall, seven Bears scored in double figures and nearly every player to touch the floor for UPIKE entered the score column.

As is becoming routine this season, Pikeville was led by senior guard Jayvian Delacruz who again was an all-around force with another 30-point game, this time with eight boards and five assists.

Luke Layhew also recorded his first double-double in a Bears uniform with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The Mavericks took a lead in the opening minute at 3-2, but that's the closest it would come to victory on the day as UPIKE went on a 17-0 run and never looked back. That lead would eventually grow as large as 76 points in the waning minutes.

Meanwhile, the Bears defense held OSU to just a 37.3 field goal percentage on the night.

As the dust began to settle, Delacruz, Layhew, Jovontae Carleton, Xaviar Gaona, Stanley Perrin, and Jazz Parker all were in double figures as coach Kelly Wells emptied his bench.

But even then, the offense kept coming. Brady Schmidt came in and made his first four shots, three from long distance, to join the double-digit club and Michael Antrobus nearly joined him with eight points in five minutes before the final buzzer sounded.
