PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- With Music City, Nashville, Tenn., just minutes away, the University of Pikeville men's and women's basketball teams will be looking to make some string music of their own when they take on Cumberland on Saturday.
Tip-off in Lebanon is set for 3 p.m. ET for the women with the men's game to follow at 5 p.m.
The sixth-ranked UPIKE men are coming off a 107-77 thumping of No. 5 Lindsey Wilson at home on Thursday, while the women were handed a 69-55 defeat against the ninth-ranked Blue Raiders. Cumberland hosted Shawnee State that night with the men holding on by one and the women falling 53-39 to No. 2 SSU.
This is the 16th meeting between the two men's programs since the 2000-01 season with UPIKE holding a 12-3 record in those games. Since the Phoenix rejoined the Mid-South Conference in 2012-13, the Bears had won 11 straight in the series before losing by four at home in January. Last season, the Bears topped Cumberland three times, winning both regular-season games before also winning 82-62 in the first round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament.
This is the 19th women's meeting between UPIKE and Cumberland with the series tied at 9 wins each. UPIKE has won seven of the last 10 games, including wins in both regular-season contests last year. In the most recent outing, the Bears lost by seven at home despite getting 14 points from Kayla Mullins.
