PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Crunch time is here in Mid-South Conference play for the University of Pikeville basketball teams as they welcome Campbellsville into the East Ky. Expo Center on Saturday.
UPIKE's men (24-3, 8-3 MSC) are looking to strengthen their hold on first place in the MSC standings, while the women (13-14, 4-7 MSC) are hoping to move up the standings for the best possible seed come tournament time.
On Thursday, the men lost 93-74 at No. 11 Georgetown, while the women overcame a 14-point fourth quarter deficit to beat Georgetown 63-62.
Today marks the 112th all-time meeting between the Bears and Tigers on the men's side with Pikeville holding a 64-47 lead in the series. UPIKE has won the last six meetings, last losing on Nov. 22, 2014 in Campbellsville. Since 2011, UPIKE owns a 9-2 record against Campbellsville with both losses coming on the road. UPIKE head coach Kelly Wells is 16-8 against the Tigers in his 12 seasons at the school.
The Bears and Tigers are meeting for the 78th time in women's series history with the Tigers holding a 69-8 lead. UPIKE had lost 18 straight to Campbellsville before taking it down 74-71 at home during the 2014-15 season. Currently, the Tigers are on a five-game winning streak in the series. The Bears' last win came on Feb. 12, 2015 behind 29 points from Khalilah Quigley in the East Ky. Expo Center.
