PIKEVILLE, Ky. – A season-high 32 turnovers by the University of Pikeville women's basketball team were too much to overcome in a 67-56 loss to No. 3 Campbellsville on Saturday.
The Tigers went 0-for-13 from 3-point range and were outshot by the Bears 38-34 percent from the field, but they did score 30 points off turnovers and outscored UPIKE's bench 22-9 to make the difference.
Aundrea Matchen paced UPIKE with 14 points and Jamie Castle added 11. Elisabeth Latham helped the Bears lead the game on the glass 41-31 with 10 rebounds and Zaria Hollier swatted three blocks.
Madison Faulkner poured in 23 points for Campbellsville and Jordan Doram added 14. Lauren Turner was the lead instigator in the stingy defensive effort with six steals.
Pikeville fell behind by as many as 19 points in the second half at 57-38 late in the third quarter, but Campbellsville's poor shooting allowed the Bears to continue to chip away. Twice in the fourth quarter UPIKE got within 11 points, but there just wasn't enough time after being buried by the ball-control mistakes.
After taking a 7-6 lead to start the game on a layup by Castle, UPIKE saw the Tigers (24-4, 10-2 MSC) go on a 10-0 run over the next four minutes which included baskets from three of Campbellsville's four Madisons; Clements, Stewart and Kaiser.
It was a nine-point Tiger lead early in the second quarter when the Bears (13-15, 4-8 MSC) rallied for an 8-3 spurt that saw them get within four points on a steal and dish from Adison Corder to Mia Greatrex to make it 27-23.
But Campbellsville went on to outscore UPIKE 13-6 the rest of the half to take an 11-point lead into halftime.
UPIKE had plenty of chances to be closer at the break as it outshot CU 52-44 percent and tied it with 14 rebounds, but 19 first-half turnovers were too much to overcome. Campbellsville, which leads the nation in steals, turned the miscues into 19 points.
