HARDEEVILLE, S.C. -- The University of Pikeville softball team lost a seventh-inning lead in the opener before falling 10-2 in the nightcap to Coastal Georgia on the first day of its four-game road trip to South Carolina on Friday.
UPIKE moves to an even 2-2 on the season while the Mariners are now 9-3.
GAME ONE - Coastal Georgia 7, UPIKE 6
Coastal Georgia topped UPIKE 7-6 on the last at bat of the game.
The Mariners were down 6-5 in when Ansley Bowen singled on a 0-2 count, scoring two runs to bring the game to a close.
UPIKE lost despite outhitting Coastal 13-9, including a pair of triples.
The Mariners got on the board in the first inning when an error scored one run.
UPIKE notched four runs in the sixth inning off the bats of Megan Claypoole and Lee Collier, who each had RBIs in the inning. Collier's was a big one, driving in three on a triple to put the Bears up 4-3.
Ansley Bowen earned the win for Coastal Georgia after allowing four runs on 12 hits over seven innings and striking out three.
Hannah Skaggs took the loss after 6 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits and striking out eight.
The Bears had five players with multiple hits, including Claypoole, Collier, Emme Barker, Jadyn Gibson and Ragan Cutright. After going 3-4 at the plate, Claypoole was at 7-for-8 on the season.
Savannah Money and Breanna Wells each collected multiple hits for Coastal Georgia which went the entire game without an error.
GAME TWO - Coastal Georgia 10, UPIKE 2 (5 inn.)
Apart from a strong opening frame, UPIKE's offense struggled in game two as it fell 10-2 in a run-rule shortened give innings.
UPIKE scored two runs in the first inning of game two, but that was it as Coastal Georgia went on to score six go-ahead runs in the fourth before ending the game on a single to centerfield as part of a four-run fifth.
Haley Osborne provided the Bears' early spark when she singled to score two runs in the top of the first. But Megan Claypoole couldn't keep the Mariners off the scoreboard forever as she ultimately took the first loss of the season after allowing nine runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.
Kendra Gannon entered in relief with a 9-2 deficit and allowed the game-ending run on a bases-loaded single.
Emily Mayson earned the win for Coastal Georgia after allowing two hits and two runs over five innings while striking out two batters.
Osborne and Lee Collier had one hit each as the Mariners led the game in hits 9-2..
