Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Edged by Cumberlands 60-58 in Closing Seconds

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Adison Corder scored nine points in the last four minutes, but her heroics came up just short as the University of Pikeville women's basketball team lost 60-58 to Cumberlands on Saturday.

It was senior day for the Bears and the party went well in the first half as they led by as many as 12 points at 23-11 in the second quarter on a Zaria Hollier layup. But Cumberlands cut the gap to three by halftime before taking its first lead since it was 4-2 at 39-38 late in the third quarter.

The Bears were able to tie the game as late as 58-58 in the final minute, but never were able to complete the comeback.

Corder and Jamie Castle led UPIKE (14-16, 5-9 MSC) with 15 points each and Aundrea Matchen chipped in with 11, but the team shot just 34 percent from the field and only got to the stripe 13 times.

Cumberlands (16-12, 4-10 MSC) made 15 of 21 free throws and shot a little better at 36 percent to make up for 18 turnovers. Shayla Simpson led all scorers with 24 points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds. Her biggest make of the game was a running layup with two seconds left that ended up being the game winners.

UPIKE never got a shot off at the end of the game as the initial inbounds pass was tipped out of bounds, leaving just 0.3 seconds on the clock. Corder caught the ensuing inbounds, but there wasn't enough time for a shot.

The game started to swing in the Patriots' favor over the last two minutes of the second quarter. After falling behind 27-17, Cumberland scored the last seven points of the half, including six by Simpson.

Still, UPIKE played well enough to build a seven-point lead at the 5:35 mark of the third, but this time Cumberlands scored 12 of the next 14 points to lead by three at the end of the frame.

The Patriots went up by as many as nine points in the final 10 minutes, but a 12-3 rally by UPIKE tied things up with 1:40 left at 55-55 on layup by Elisabeth Latham. Simpson and Corder traded 3s on the next two possessions before Simpson put UC up for good with the late bucket.
