Baseball Loses a Lead Twice in One-Run Losses to Midway

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Despite outhitting Midway a combined 13-11, the University of Pikeville baseball team dropped a pair of one-run decisions to the Eagles on Sunday at the Hambley Athletic Complex.

Matt Peterson was hotter than a California afternoon in July as he went a combined 4-for-5 with an RBI double and Nelson Muniz and Nelson Muniz hit a ball out of the park in game one, but It wasn't enough to fend off a couple of Midway comebacks.

UPIKE's pitching decisions went to both starters as Jake Hamilton allowed just one earned run on five hits with three strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings and Bruce Bell allowed two runs on five hits with five Ks in 5 2/3.

After Peterson hit his laser double in the first inning of the opener and Muniz added his home run in the fifth, the Bears had a 2-0 lead heading into the sixth inning. But a leadoff walk and double put runners on third and second with no outs for the Eagles.

A squeeze bunt resulted in a run scoring on a throwing error to the plate, while also allowing a runner to advance to third base. Matthew Olson then provided the tying swing as his sacrifice fly to left allowed Barrett Croslin to score.

UPIKE went hitless in the sixth and seventh innings as Midway took its 3-2 lead on sequence in the seventh that included a one-out single, sac bunt and RBI single to center by Danny Maguire.

Game two saw the Bears strike first as well with Brandon Sewell sending a double into far left field, allowing Peterson to hustle all the way home from first base. Midway was able to answer quickly as a hit leadoff batter led to another sac bunt and double by Maguire to tie the game.

An inning later in the fourth, Olson put the Eagles up for good with a two-out RBI double to left field. Bell had recorded a groundout and strikeout to start the frame before a walk and double was all Midway needed to push ahead.

UPIKE failed to tally a hit in the next four innings as Midway relievers Tyler Jones and Olson combined for three strikeouts and just one walk. Olson receieved the save after striking out two while not allowing a hit in the final inning.
