Women’s Basketball Struggles Offensively in 69-55 Loss to No. 9 Lindsey Wilson

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Kayla Styles tallied 26 points and 12 rebounds to lead ninth-ranked Lindsey Wilson past the University of Pikeville women's basketball team 69-55 on Thursday in the East Ky. Expo Center.

Aundrea Matchen scored 16 points to lead UPIKE (12-13, 3-6 MSC), but it shot just 33.3 percent as a team and turned the ball over 13 times with just six assists. Lindsey shot 46 percent, and outrebounded UPIKE 43-31.

Adison Corder got all of her scoring done with three 3-pointers and Kayla Mullins made two 3s and three free throws to finish with nine points as well.

Lindsey Wilson (20-4, 7-2 MSC) took over the lead at 8-7 on a Teanna Curry fastbreak layup and never relinquished it. The Blue Raiders went on to score the last eight points of the quarter to take a 16-8 lead into the second quarter.

The gap grew before halftime as Lindsey outscored the Bears 21-9 in the second quarter. The lead reached double figures at 20-10 on a Curry free throw and eventually grew as high as 22 points with 1:40 on the clock.

Lindsey led 37-17 at halftime behind 14 points from Styles as it shot 46 percent from the field while holding the Bears to just a 20-percent mark (6-29).

UPIKE had its best showing of the night over the first three minutes of the third quarter when it started off on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 14 on a put back by Matchen. But by the end of the frame, the Blue Raiders had gotten all the points back as both teams finished with 13 points.

The Bears finally outscored Lindsey in the final 10 minutes 25-19, but again, the closest they could claw back was within 14 points. After falling behind by as many as 24 points, the Bears ended up scoring eight of the final 10 points, including two free throws by Rachel Lee to end the scoring.
