Baseball Shuts out Ohio Christian after Game-One Loss

CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio -- Spring break started out with a split for the University of Pikeville baseball team as it fell 7-2 in game one before shutting out Ohio Christian 6-0 in the nightcap on Monday.

UPIKE moves to 14-9 overall and the Trailblazers are now 5-17.

GAME ONE - Ohio Christian 7, UPIKE 2

UPIKE was only outhit 7-4 and had one less error in the field, but it left 10 runners on base to lose by five runs in the opener.

The Trailblazers also had the only two extra-base hits as they used a six-run second inning to stay on top throughout the game. UPIKE got two runs back in the third inning on back-to-back RBIs by Jorge Perez and Brandown Sewell, but that did it for the Bears' offense.

Jacob Alverado led the Bears at the plate with two hits, while Matt Peterson and Jay Vincent each added one.

Ean Walda lasted 3 2/3 innings in his start, scattering six hits for seven runs with two strikeouts to take the loss. Brandon Focarett went a full seven innings to grab the win despite walking eight batters,

GAME TWO - UPIKE 6, Ohio Christian 0

Led by Daniel Sterenberg with two hits, UPIKE outhit OCU 8-4 and got three solid pitching performances in the shut-out win.

Justin Dzubia started on the mound, throwing two innings of one-hit baseball with two strikeouts. Charlie Cokley took over in the third with a 2-0 lead and went three innings while allowing just one hit with two strikeouts as well.

The final two frames were given to Max Hall as he gave up two hits and struck out one batter to close out the game. The trio combined for five strikeouts and just one walk.

The Bears added runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to use a steady and consistent scoring attack after being frustrated at the plate with runners on base in game one.

Travis Haen led the Bears with an RBI triple and Vincent added an RBI double as the only two extra-base hits in the game.

Logan Hill took the loss after five innings of work as he fanned three batters and walked four with little support at the plate.
