Softball Stays Perfect in Myrtle Beach, Routs Alfred St. and Cazenovia

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – For the first time since 2011, the University of Pikeville softball team has won eight straight after routing Alfred State (N.Y.) 15-0 in five innings and taking care of business against Cazenovia (N.Y.) 6-1 on Thursday to wrap up a spring-break trip to Myrtle Beach.

With the wins, the Bears move to 12-6 on the season while Alfred State is now 0-8 and Cazenovia is 2-5.

GAME ONE – UPIKE 15, Alfred State 0 (5 inn.)

UPIKE had two pitchers combine for the shutout as Hannah Skaggs threw three innings to earn the win before handing the game over to Kendra Gannon for the last six outs.

The Bears were comfortable from the start as they tallied 12 runs in the first inning. Lee CollierKitty RaymondKelsey WhiteEmme BarkerHannah Absher, and Jadyn Gibson all drove in runs in the frame.

Skaggs allowed one hit and no runs over her three innings, striking out one and finishing without a walk. Gannon threw two innings in relief and didn't allow a hit with one strikeout.

Megan Claypoole led UPIKE with two hits in two at bats as it outhit Alfred State 8-1 overall and didn't commit an error. Doubles were hit by Raymond and White while Collier and Chandler Kelly both stole two bases.

GAME TWO – UPIKE 6, Cazenovia 1

Claypool went from being hot at the plate to earning the victory in the circle in game two. She threw all seven innings, allowing seven hits and one run while striking out a whopping 14 batters with just one walk.

Abigail House took the loss for Cazenovia as she also went the distance, but allowed eight hits and six runs with just one batter struck out.

Kelsey White and Claypoole each collected multiple hits for UPIKE as White also drove in a pair of runs and had the only extra-base hit with a double.

UPIKE returns home to face Bluefield (Va.) at 3 p.m. ET on Monday at Paul Butcher Field.
