Skaggs Wins Two for Softball against Alice Lloyd

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Pikeville softball team routed visiting Alice Lloyd 10-0 in five innings in the opener before coming from behind for a 10-3 win in the nightcap on Wednesday at Paul Butcher Field.

The wins bring the Bears to an even 6-6 on the season, while the Eagles drop to 0-8, including four losses to UPIKE. Hannah Skaggs ended up with both pitching decisions as she improved to 4-3 on the season.

UPIKE 10, Alice Lloyd 0 (5 inn.)

It was only 1-0 through three innings, with the only run scoring on a wild throw by Alice Lloyd in the second inning.

But the pitcher's duel hit a snag for the Eagles in the fourth as the Bears scored nine runs on four hits and three errors to help bring the game to an early close by run rule after the fifth inning.

In the big frame, Emme Barker drove in two runs on a single, Jordan Gentry and Barker scored on a dropped fly in center, Chandler Kelly hit a two-run single and Megan Claypoole hit a two-run shot to left center. All those hits made it 9-0 before Bryanna Souels came home on a wild throw from the shortstop to end the scoring.

Alice Lloyd went down in order in the fifth, allowing the Bears to hold onto the eight-run lead needed to end the game early.

Skaggs threw a complete five innings to record the win while giving up just one hit and striking out three without any walks. Claypoole's home run was the only extra-base hit in the game as she finished 1-for-1 and drew a pair of walks.

Barker was the only player to manage multiple hits as she went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a walk and a run scored.

UPIKE 10, Alice Lloyd 3

UPIKE found itself down 2-1 heading into the third inning when Lee Collier and Kitty Raymond drove in runs with singles to take its first lead of the game.

Alice Lloyd wasn't done hanging around though as it tied the score at 3-3 in the fifth on a triple by Jada Estep. The hit shouldn't have happened, but a dropped pop out in foul territory with two outs kept the inning alive. After Estep roped the RBI triple, Skaggs came back into the game to pitch.

Claypoole had started the game, but was relieved after scattering four hits for three runs with nine strikeouts and three walks in 4 2/3 innings.

Skaggs ended up shutting the Eagles out the rest of the way while allowing just three hits and striking out five batters. She also didn't give up a walk for the second straight outing.

Knotted at 3-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth the Bears' bats woke up as Kelsey White broke the tie on a groundout RBI, followed by Jadyn Gibson hitting into an error to allow Raymond to hustle home and make It 5-3. UPIKE doubled its runs in the sixth on four hits, including a three-run triple by Kelsey White to put the game away.

White and Haley Osborne both hit triples and Gentry, Raymond and Osborne added doubles. Jadyn Gibson had a big day at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs while also stealing a base.
