PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- The University of Pikeville softball team swept a doubleheader with Cumberland (Tenn.), winning 5-4 and 3-2 on Friday at Paul Butcher Field.
With the wins, the Bears improve to 20-14 overall and 4-8 in Mid-South Conference play, while the Phoenix are now 28-15 overall and 6-10 in league play.
Pitchers Hannah Skaggs and Megan Claypoole made a bit of history for UPIKE as they became the second duo in program history to win at least 10 games each.
UPIKE and Cumberland wrap up the four-game series starting at Noon ET on Saturday at Paul Butcher Field.
GAME ONE - UPIKE 5, Cumberland 4
The Bears grabbed the lead late as it was tied at 3-3 when they went to the plate in the bottom of the fifth when Chandler Kelly singled on a 3-2 count, scoring two runs.
Cumberland made it a one-run game in the top of the seventh and had the tying run on third when a hard groundball was fielded perfectly by third baseman Kelsey White for the final putout.
Skaggs earned the complete-game win in the circle, allowing four runs on 13 hits, striking out two and not surrendering a walk.
Morgan Arndt took the loss for Cumberland after giving up five runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings with three strikeouts.
UPIKE collected ten hits in the game as Kelly, Kitty Raymond, Jordan Gentry and White each managed to tally two.
Cumberland outhit it with 13, but also committed two errors.
GAME TWO - UPIKE 3, Cumberland 2
Claypoole allowed just five hits to Cumberland and UPIKE rode the momentum of Gentry's leadoff home run in the first inning all the way to another one-run win in the nightcap.
Claypoole lasted all seven innings as well, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out five and walking one.
Kayley Caplinger gave up three runs on two hits over three innings to take the loss.
All three UPIKE runs came home in the first inning as Kitty Raymond followed Gentry's blast with an RBI double and White drove in a run on a groundout.
Cumberland outhit the Bears 5-3 overall, but left 11 runners on base and failed to register an extra-base hit.
