PIKEVILLE, Ky. – There's no better time to get hot than in the final regular-season series of the season.
And the University of Pikeville baseball team did just that, at least in the opener on Friday, as it routed visiting Lindsey Wilson 10-2 at Johnnie LeMaster Field.
Nelson Muniz tripled and matched Luke Lubiniecki for the game high with three RBIs as the Bears outhit the Blue Raiders 7-6. Lindsey Wilson (21-25, 7-8 MSC) also committed three errors to help UPIKE (25-20, 6-10) collect its second straight Mid-South Conference win.
The Bears will now get a chance to do something they've only done once this season – win an MSC series – and the feat would be sweetened with senior day on deck Saturday.
With two more wins on Saturday, UPIKE could technically jump to as high as tied for third in the conference standings, although Georgetown, which is one spot ahead, will be the heavy favorite against Kentucky Christian.
A double, wild pitch and Oliver Baez single put the Blue Raiders on the board in the first inning, but they wouldn't score again until another single run in the seventh. Bruce Bell (5-4) ended up collecting the win after allowing a run and four hits in six innings.
Bell got plenty of early support as UPIKE scored two go-ahead runs in the first inning on an error at third base and groundout by Muniz.
Five more runs were tacked on in the second inning as the Bears rattled off four hits, including RBI singles by Lubiniecki and Jacob Alverado, followed by Muniz bringing two runs home on his triple. Matt Peterson ended the scoring in the frame with a single before ending it by being caught stealing.
But despite the miscue on the base paths, the win was already all but secured. Another run scoring single by Peterson in the fourth and Lubiniecki driving in two more in the fifth provided the insurance to slam the door shut.
Lindsey Wilson starter Louis Corral (2-3) lasted just two innings while allowing seven runs on four hits with just one strikeout. His defense wasn't his best friend, committing two errors during his time on the mound.
Both Lubiniecki and Peterson went 2 for 4 and Jay Vincent drew a game-best two walks.
